Work Hours Calculator
Shift hours with break subtraction, overnight support, and net/gross split.
Shift hours
—
How it works
- The gross span is the elapsed time from start to end: an end time earlier than the start is treated as crossing midnight and labeled as an overnight span.
- Your unpaid break is subtracted from the gross span to get net working time; the break is never allowed to make net negative (the result notes the clamp instead).
- Both figures are shown as H:MM and decimal hours, since timesheets read H:MM but payroll systems bill decimals.
Good to know
- This is a duration tool, not payroll: overtime rules, premiums and rounding regulations vary by jurisdiction.
- Equal start and end times count as a full 24-hour span under the overnight rule; the label tells you when that interpretation applied.
- Multiple shifts: compute each shift here and add the decimal hours (the Decimal Hours Converter handles the arithmetic).

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between gross and net hours?
Gross is the full span from start to end; net subtracts your unpaid break. A 9:00 to 17:00 shift with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 8.0 gross, 7.5 net.
Does it handle overnight shifts?
Yes: an end time earlier than the start time is treated as crossing midnight, and the result is labeled as an overnight span so you can verify it.
Is this a payroll tool?
No: it calculates durations, not wages or compliance. Overtime rules, premiums, and rounding regulations vary by jurisdiction; check with your provider.
